after the stream that still crosses the town's Treadaway Park
.

The government granted a post office to the area in 1878, it was given the name of Cross Plains due to being a point where stagecoaches and military roads crossed prior to the Civil War.

It is believed that Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant camped with their troops in what is now Treadaway Park.

The town was moved from the west banks of Turkey Creek to its present site in January of 1911 in anticipation of the coming railroad. The first train arrived in Cross Plains one year later on January 11, 1912.

Population growth was steady until an oil boom began in 1925, which led the population to shoot above 1,000 people by 1940. The town population has hovered around 1,000 people ever since.
